TLC Resources and Weekly Blasts

Remember that the goal of the program is for you to develop in all aspects of TEACHING, LANGUAGE, and CULTURE

Teaching

  • Give a brief presentation to your uSC over Zoom by sharing your screen and using other remote learning tools

  • Discuss the best way to organize a presentation. Choose a topic and together write up a presentation.

  • Explain a homework problem, lab experiment, discussion article, etc. to your uSC – a “student in your class.”

  • Role play various situations in teaching – holding office hours, managing problem students, handling difficult questions, etc.

  • Discuss the nature of teaching in the U.S. What are students’ expectations? What are instructors’ expectations?

  • Allow the uSC to silently observe you teach your class (this will count as one of your weekly hours). Meet together afterwards so that you can receive feedback.

Language

  • Work on pronunciation exercises (drills, dialogues, etc.). Your uSC can find materials.

  • Practice pronouncing key words from your field (look in the index of one of your textbooks).

  • Read aloud from an article (short story, internet website, etc.). Ask your uSC to correct sounds, stress, intonation.

  • Review grammatical points that give you trouble.

  • Go over slang and/or idioms; keep a notebook of new expressions and ask your uSC to explain them to you and give you a context in which to use them.

  • Use a tape recorder to tape your conversations, pronunciation, or grammar practice. Listen and review prior to your next session with your uSC.

  • Choose a local business and call to get information about their services.

  • Call your uSC on the phone and chat. Discuss phone etiquette and useful phrases.

Culture

  • Visit Museums virtually

  • Take a look at the Daily Trojan and discuss sports, politics or cultural news.

  • Read some cartoons for pronunciation, idioms, puns, and cultural knowledge.

  • Watch a video or sitcom together. Discuss the plot and new words/phrases.

  • Attend virtual uSC events (guest speakers, Visions & Voices)

  • Cook a recipe together on Zoom

  • Attend virtual uSC Program events

3/25

Hello everyone!

Welcome to this week's TLC blast! We hope your weekends were restful so that you're pumped up for your meetings and BRFs this week! That being said, BRF 3 is right around the corner with the due date being this Wednesday, March 27 at noon; and when there's a BRF, you can count on your Workday hours being due at midnight the same night. So make sure you log and submit your hours on Workday by 11:59 pm on Wednesday after submitting your thoughtful and detailed BRF 3. This BRF and Workday period should include your meetings between: March 18 - March 27 (2 HOURS per ITA + 15 minutes per report to account for writing time).

As a reminder, your mentors are here to support you with any questions or concerns you may have, so please feel free to reach out!

Interviews

We are on the lookout for pairs of uSCs and ITAs that would be willing to do a quick interview for our social media. Our Instagram is @usc_americanlanguageinstitute and that is where we would be posting your brief (5 minutes max) interview. The interviews will be held in person and can take place during one of your meetings together. The questions will be very simple, yet give insight into the work we do in the program.

Here’s an example list of questions:

  • Introduce yourself (name, year, major, hometown)

  • How long have you been a part of the program?

  • What do you enjoy about the program (what have you learned from each other, what aspect of TLC do you enjoy the most/find most useful, what was your favorite thing you’ve done together?)

  • For what reasons would you recommend the program to someone else?

  • Fun question:

    • If a genie granted you three wishes what would they be?

    • If you could be a character in any movie, who would you be?

Please email us if you are interested in participating!!

Shoutouts

TEACHING - uSC Fira, ITA Zhengze

Fira and Zhengze brainstormed ways to have an engaging class!

  • “On Thursday, the 15th, Zhengze and I met for an hour and started by looking over his upcoming lab (bean counting). We talked about possible attention getters he could open the class with and possible sources of confusion during the lab.”

LANGUAGE - uSC Ally, ITA Bin

Ally and Bin practiced pronunciation while reviewing practice questions for a driver’s exam!

  • “Bin and I studied for the LA Drivers Test together. I had Bin read out loud all the practice questions and answers to practice his pronunciation. This was a great activity for us to not only practice English but learn more about LA driving rules.”

CULTURE - uSC Denise, ITA Chan Mao

Denise and Chan Mao discussed the political culture and structure of the US government!

  • “We also had a conversation about the US government system. He asked about the presidential elections that are coming up which enacted an in depth conversation. I explained to him the responsibilities of each of the three branches of government. We also talked about the major political parties and how laws vary by state.”
